J. Rockett A.P.E.

J. Rockett Audio Designs has long been a builder catering to the tone connoisseurs, and their new pedal, the APE (an acronym for Analog Preamp Experiment) reinforces that role by delivering a device with a very specific, ultra-niche but also very unique function: the APE is a preamp circuit whose simple purpose is to feed your delay, by adding the color of the revered Echoplex EP3’s preamp.

A Send/Return loop (side jacks) facilitates connection and integration with your favorite delay, and the three knobs allow to fine-tune the way it interacts with it, here are the knobs’ functions:

? MIX – When your favorite digital delay is inserted into the loop it controls the wet/dry mix level.
? REPEATS – When your favorite digital delay is inserted into the loop it controls the repeats.
? REC – When your favorite digital delay is inserted into the loop it controls the gain on the delayed notes and helps
with the intensity of the delay.

The loop can be turned off independently from the preamp, which can, therefore, color your sound even sans delay.

The APE is a unique design and an accurate re-creation of a famous vintage tape delay’s analogue section. This is not just a preamp but rather the entire analogue circuit from input to output including the sonic influence of the tape heads. It runs at 22.5v just like the original. For convenience it uses a DC to DC converter allowing you to power it with a simple standard 2.1/5.5mm 9v power supply just like most of the pedals on the market.
